Seto Kaiba
Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Monsters
Worn at: Ohayocon 2005, Tekkoshocon 2005, Harucon 2005, Otakon 2005
Awards: NessaChan's Judge's Award for craftsmanship at Tekkoshocon 2005
Inspiration: When my sister and I discussed cosplaying Yu-Gi-Oh characters, there was no question what my choice would be. Kaiba is so sexy and the Battle City outfit is so damn awesome! What could be better for my first crossplay?
Design: I wanted to make the costume look as close to the anime version as possible. Unfortunately, certain parts of the trench coat are drawn differently from episode to episode, and the true color of the coat's lining is something to be debated as well. I used countless other cosplayers as references to find out exactly what I did and didn't want in my own costume, and I'm very happy with the final result! (I also used my real hair for this costume!)
Construction: The accessories for this costume took a lot of work. I made the eight arm & leg belts, forearm guards, necklace and belt buckle from scratch. The trench coat is very heavy because it's made out of thick upholstery vinyl.
Favorite Aspect: I absolutely love the way everything turned out, and it feels so awesome to walk around knowing I can represent such a badass character. I like the picture of little Mokuba on my necklace too ^^
Construction Difficulties: First and foremost, the upholstery vinyl was a pain in the ass to work with because it's so thick and heavy. It never wanted to stay on the table for sewing, pinholes were very difficult to hide, and hand-sewing was just painful. There was so much more hand-sewing needed than I thought there would be. Mostly with connecting the lining to the vinyl. I did it all within a few days as well, which was not nice on my fingers ;-;
